Wednesday, 25 June 2014, 18:30

Family Event

Raystede welcomes Johanna Angermeyer, daughter of one of the first European families to settle in the Galapagos Islands in 1935, to talk about her time in the islands.

After studying music and art in Quito, Ecuador, Johanna returned to the islands where she lived on a remote farm in the highlands and guided on one of the few yachts to tour the islands before the world was aware of the exotic wildlife.

"My Father's Island", her acclaimed story of her family's impossibly romantic history, is in its 8th edition. Johanna has lectured at The Yorkshire Post Literary Luncheon, The Royal Geographic Society, has made numerous BBC radio and television appearances and her book has been the subject of radio and television documentaries.

After looking after several Stately Homes for The National Trust, Johanna and her husband settled in the Sussex countryside where Johanna continues to write and illustrate books.
Having helped establish domestic animal welfare programmes in the Galapagos, Johanna maintains close ties with the islands and returns often.

Raystede welcomes Ray Hale, the author and wildlife photographer, to talk about spiders!

Author & Wildlife Photographer
Having spent many years in the Private Sector as an Industrial Health and Safety consultant, Ray has finally had the opportunity to follow his passion.

His lectures include Rainforest Conservation, Saving Endangered Species, The History of Sabah, Rajah Brooke and the Head Hunters of Borneo. Although he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of wildlife in general, his main field of study has always been centred on arachnids and he is a recognised World authority on the large so called “bird eating tarantulas” as well as the large number of species of spiders of the United Kingdom. He belongs to a number of organisations including the British Arachnological Society and the British Tarantula Society of which he is a council member.

He has written a number of articles on Arachnology and in 1998 he published the book “An Introduction to the Spiders of the Genus Haplopelma: A Study of the Tarantulas of South East Asia”. He is currently writing a field guide to the spiders of Malaysia. He has had a number of his photographs published in entomological and Arachnological journals.
